Puneet Singh SinghalAbout the Author:

My name is Puneet Singh Singhal from New Delhi, India. I am a person with an undiagnosed learning disability and stammering. I see my life as the intersection of poverty, domestic violence, and multiple invisible disabilities. I am a disability activist advocating for a more inclusive and accessible society for people with different and distinct, visible and invisible disabilities. I am the founder of a non-profit called ssstart, working towards normalizing speech and communication disabilities.

We are here,

We were there,

We will always be here and there, or somewhere,

We are unseen and unheard.

Tired of being hidden and neglected,

drained, exhausted and full of distress,

we are what we are,

shamed and ridiculed of what we are,

we wish to free our stuttering voices,

we pray to speak up and flaunt our stutter unapologetically.

Let’s make a pledge,

Let’s craft a blessing,

blessing of listening.

Listening with patience,

listening without interruption,

listening with empathy,

listening without prejudging,

listening with warmth,

listening without prejudice,

listening with admiration,

listening without correcting,

listening with respect,

listening without running,

listening with poise,

listening without arrogance,

listening with humbleness.

Then with the power of this blessing

there will be love, compassion and joy.

The endless and limitless feeling of belonging

that we are longing for.

This will end our endless wait for inclusion,

this will end the stigma, the bias, the shame

and our lifelong resentment, despair and misery.

And will bring harmony, amity and unity.

The onus lies on us, on all of us.

Let’s start now.

Let’s do all this together.

Blessing of Listening: Liberating Ourselves from Shame and Guilt, and be Seen and Heard – Puneet Singh Singhal — 8 Comments

  1. This poetry is inspired by “Today I Will Listen” by Marva Shand-McIntosh, founder of I Love to Listen Day ( https://www.ilovetolisten.com/ ). She is an internationally Certified Listening Professional and a nationally certified Speech Language Pathologist who serves in the District of Columbia Public Schools.

The Blessing format is taken from the book ” TO BLESS THE SPACE BETWEEN US” by John O’Donohue. The book was introduced to me by Eva Schaefer, my teammate at http://www.ssstart.org and mentor. She is an event facilitator and an ally to people with stammering.

  2. What a beautiful call to unity and expression of the range of your experiences and feelings. I love the part where you said let us craft a blessing. As a future SLP, you have given me a new depth of understanding. Thank you for sharing.

    • Thank you for your kind words, Mary.

I wish you all the best for your journey to becoming a SLP, it is indeed a big responsibility, at times challenging and always full of learning and fulfillment.

      Best,
      Puneet

  4. Thank you for sharing this poem! The words written show how we as individuals should all pledge to take other individuals in consideration while listening to them. I truly believe that if we hold ourselves accountable we can create unity to ensure individuals who stutter are more comfortable with their voice.

  5. Dear fellow people with stammering, parents, friends, and allies,

I am grateful that so many people have gone through this blessing. More than 1100 views is a pleasant surprise for me. My heart is full of love and compassion.

Happy International Stuttering Awareness Day, this year and every year. 🙂

    Best
    Puneet
