What an interesting way to look at stuttering. I found it fascinating how Joe Biden’s mom turned stuttering and made it into something good – being too smart. As a future speech language pathologist, it is good to know about different techniques/approaches that have worked with different individuals. It is too bad that everything has a stereotype these days. The picture at the top of the article goes to show that no matter what a person does/looks like, there is a stereotype to go along with it. Stuttering, along with many other things, would be looked at in a very different light if we could change the stereotype that goes along with it. If we connected stuttering with words such as capable, talented, skilled, competent, or gifted, I believe it would change how people view people who stutter, and also how people who stutter view themselves.
Annie,
Thank you so much for your words “capable, talented, skilled, competent, or gifted.” I felt so free when hearing this.
