Instructions for Submissions

Requirements for submissions to the International Stuttering Awareness Day Online Conference

All submissions must be emailed to isad@isad.live

The International Stuttering Association (ISA) is pleased to announce it will be hosting the International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD) Online Conference October 1-22, 2019, celebrating the 22nd time the online conference has been held! A small team made up to Anita Blom, Dan Hudock, Hanan Hurwitz, Bruce Imhoff, McKenzie Jemmett, Scott Palasik and Pamela Mertz will coordinate this event, continuing the hard work of Judy Kuster who ran previous online conferences.

The 2019 Online Conference will start October 1 and finish October 22, to coincide with many events around the world in October 22, International Stuttering Awareness Day.

We are calling for submissions for

  • the ISAD online conference
  • for people to participate in the ‘Talk to a Professional’ for the 2019 ISAD Online Conference.
  • for associations to record activities their association is doing for this important day.

This message explains the requirements and deadlines for content.

We welcome submissions from not only people who stutter (PWS) and professionals (SLPs/SLTs), but also from those who are the partners, parents, children, teachers, colleagues and other people who support PWS.

Your submission must be aligned with the theme. Where the link between your submission and the theme is unclear, authors will be asked to provide additional descriptive text explaining the relationship between the submission and the theme. If the submission is not aligned with the theme, your submission might be rejected.

We ask for people to commit in a number of ways.

  1. Write a paper.
  • Write a paper (in English). These submissions MUST be 2000 words or less.  You are welcome to submit shorter documents.
  • Please provide a title.
  • Your submission must be directly aligned with the theme.
  • Submissions, in the format of a paper, a piece of poetry, a song, a drawing or something else are also welcome.
  • If you quote or use material from another person, please cite the reference at the bottom of the paper (APA referencing is preferred).
  • Papers must be submitted by August 31 and should be provided in text (TXT), rich text format (RTF) or Word (DOC/X) format.  Do not submit PDF. Images can be included.  Special fonts should not be used, as all papers will be presented in the same style.  The team will assess all submissions and may ask for clarification, shortening or rewording if necessary.  Please do not use complex formatting or language, as many visitors may not be native speakers of English.  If you have something visually complex to include, convert it into an image and send the image attached to your submission.
  1. Make a video or audio presentation.
  • Record audio to be loaded to the website.
  • Your submission is must be directly aligned with the theme.

  1. Contribute to the online conference through other mediums. (eg. poems, drawings)
We are always looking for new and unique ways of expressing your stories through social media or other methods, in a way that can be easily shared through the ISAD Online Conference.  For example, Facebook, Vines, Instagram, Twitter… or something else, get in touch with us about your ideas!
  2. Participate as a professional.
As in previous online conferences, we will provide a space for participants to ask questions to Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and other professionals in the field.  The professionals will monitor the questions in the ‘Talk to a Professional’ forum.
  3. Write about the International Stuttering Awareness Day event(s) in your country.
    Write a short summary about what your association is doing for the ISAD.  One of the points of the online conference is to raise awareness of International Stuttering Awareness Day and find out what others are doing.  If your association is doing something special, please let us know;
  • your country
  • your association’s name
  • what you are doing for International Stuttering Awareness Day this year
  • include any venues, dates and times of activities, so others in your country can support you!

Send all emails/submissions/requests, including your contact details, to isad@isad.live, so we can contact you if we need to.  All submissions are due by August 31.  If you intend to submit please let us know as soon as possible so we can prepare for the number of submissions.  Late submissions will not be accepted.

For all participants in the conference we ask you to:

  • Provide a short bio about yourself (not more than 150 words) with a picture of your head/face attached to the file, as an introduction of who you are and your background.
  • During the online conference, you will need to monitor the page where your submission is stored and respond to comments made by others every few days.

We look forward to your contribution to the ISAD online conference this year!

Kind regards

The International Stuttering Awareness Day Online Conference Team

Instructions for participants

The contributions in this conference reflect professional and consumer interests about stuttering and are presented by many different countries.  Each submission also has a threaded discussion at the bottom of the page for your comments and questions. Authors of the submissions will respond as they wish. Feel free to post your questions/comments at any time and check back for a response from the author.

You can enter the conference by clicking on the top menu bar and read the content. If you would like to comment or ask a question you must login – you can register or login using your Facebook, Twitter or Google, as shown on the login/register pages.  If you are not already registered, you must register first.  Login and register options appear on the right navigation bar. We have a login requirement to help us prevent spam, duplication and inappropriate posts. It is much harder to manage these after the fact than it is to manage proactively.

If you are posting comments on a submission, please check previous comments to be sure your question hasn’t already been asked. Also please check the replies to comments by others, as the authors give a lot of information, tips and ideas that might be interesting and useful for you.

For those of you using the ‘Talk to a Professional’ (where you can ask questions of professionals in the speech and language pathology field) and the ‘ISAD Around the World’ (where you can post and read about International Stuttering Awareness Day around the world) pages, please read the instructions on each introduction page before posting to that topic.

You can see and comment on submissions between October 1 and October 22.  After October 22 you can still see submissions but you cannot comment.

People reading the pages of this online conference may not have English as their first language. An automated translation service can be found on the right side of each page of this website.  To use it on a specific page, click the preferred language. From that point on, all pages you select will translate into your selected language.

Please keep comments relevant and in context of the current discussion.  If you have a question that is not directly related to a submission or existing topic in ‘Talk to a Professional’, please create a new post in the ‘Talk to a Professional’ topic.

Contributors to the conference are solely responsible for the information they provide. Neither the International Stuttering Association nor the Online Conference team are responsible for the accuracy of the information provided by contributors. The authors’ submissions will be permanently archived on the International Stuttering Awareness site pages for your future reference.

We hope you enjoy the conference!

Background

Participants were asked for submissions, or to participate as professionals, based on specific criteria as specified here.

International Stuttering Awareness Day, ISAD, (October 22) began in 1998, spear-headed by Michael Sugarman, Oakland, California. ISAD recognizes the growing alliance between speech-language professionals and consumers, who are learning from each other and working together to share, give support, and educate one another and the general public on the impact that stuttering has on individuals’ lives. Online conferences, organized by Judy Kuster, have been an integral part of International Stuttering Awareness Day since its inception.

Judy Kuster, currently emeritus professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato, put together the ISAD Online Conference every year since its inception in 1998 up to and including 2012, when Judy retired from chairing these wonderful conferences.  Judy continues her work managing the Stuttering Home Page.

The International Stuttering Association has formed a small team made up of Anita Blom, Dan Hudock, Hanan Hurwitz, Bruce Imhoff, McKenzie Jemmett and Scott Palasik to produce and run the ISAD Online Conference. We hope we can live up to the high expectations of previous conference attendees.

For participants who need some basic information about stuttering, please read about Stuttering from the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association. Additional information is available on the Stuttering Home Page.

The conference is designed for People Who Stutter (PWS), their families and employers, the professionals who work with them, students in training and their instructors, but of course anyone with an interest in stuttering and the lives of PWS are welcome to join in.

From October 1, submissions will be published on a variety of topics related to stuttering. An online forum, Talk to a Professional, will also be available, where you can ask questions of profressionals in the field of stuttering. You will also find a section “ISAD Around the World” where people can post and comment on different activities on, or around, the ISAD.
