Showing Compassion — 2 Comments

  1. Hi Carson, this is an interesting question! I think the best, and most straightforward way to show clients compassion is to truly listen to them. Give each individual time to speak and listen to the message behind their words, so that you can tailor your treatment recommendations to them as an individual, considering their own individual circumstances and needs. It can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking, ‘oh you stammer! So I’ll do X, Y and Z in therapy because that’s what I always do and that’s what has worked before with people who stammer.’ But every person is an individual, their stammer will have had a different impact on them and they will be seeking therapy support for their own individual reasons. So listen to them, individualise therapy plans based on the information they share with you and I think then your clients will feel understood and cared about.
    I hope that helps,
    Jenny

  2. Hello, Carson! The best thing that you can do for an individual who stutters is LISTEN. Listen to what this person has to say, and realize that they are a human being sitting in front of you, just as you are. They are no different. 🙂 You may be the first person to ever listen to them, in their life. You may also be the first person to allow this individual to say what they want to say as well. This can make a huge impact on their life, and yours too. Keep being amazing, and congratulations on your studies!
