Question to Professional
Hi! My name is Emily Branham, and I am currently a graduate student in the Speech Language Pathology program at Stephen F. Austin State University. I am taking a fluency course this semester and have really enjoyed learning more about stuttering and the different approaches to treatment! My question for you is: When working with children who stutter, how do you determine whether to focus more on fluency strategies or on helping the child build confidence and develop positive feelings toward their communication?

Hi emily,
To me working monte on fluency strategies will never be a goal. It might “work” for some times, but in the end the child (or their parents) feels not ‘working enough’. Because it will not stick. Research also shows this. so building confidence in their communication and stuttering openly is the only way to go
