About the Author:

My name is Melissa Bronsart, I am a 29 year old PWS living in Paris, France. My stutter used to be quite strong when I was a child, and in my teenage years. Thanks to speech therapy, group sessions and mostly acceptance, I managed to come to terms with it. Today, even though it is scarce, I am not ashamed anymore. I got into documentary film making and felt the duty to share about stuttering thought my work as well.

This is a short clip of the documentary The Eloquence of Stuttering in which, Line, one of the candidates, delivers her speech on “Is being different a chance?”

This eloquence contest was created in Paris in 2019. Its purpose is to prove that eloquence and stuttering are compatible, and that people who stutter do have things to say. By leaving their fear behind, they are able to access a new-found joy of speaking and to show that stuttering is not an obstacle to their personal fulfillment. The important thing is the message we want to convey, not the perfection of fluency.

Moreover, renewing the power of speech enables them to find resilience. To see stuttering as a driving force, instead of a weakness.

Taking part in this contest has shown me the beauty of diversity and how refreshing it could be to finally embrace your identity, even when it is said to be abnormal according to societal norms.

The whole film, which I directed, is 1 hour long. Let me know if you would be interested in watching it!

  1. Thank you for sharing this clip. I loved the message about stuttering showing the eternal worth of diversity and the reminder that we as human beings are all unique and that we can embrace all of those differences. Please let me know how I can view the entire documentary.

  2. Melissa,
The speech within this video clip was very inspirational to me. The struggles a person who stutters faces on a daily basis is, especially in the public eye, is something I never had to face myself. I hope this message can help others and provide them with the confidence needed to tackle life when living with a stuttering disorder.

    • Dear Samantha,
Thank you for your words. Thats what I hoping too. I think that self-affirmation is key in this process and Line put it into words beautifully ! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Melissa,

This video really showed what a person who stutters experiences on an every day basis. Line expressed it beautifully and this is a video more people should watch, not just to understand but to show the importance of self-acceptance.

    Thank you so much

  4. Great to see you sharing your film during this conference, Melissa! I attended many stuttering conferences and itโ€™s always an awesome and beautiful experience to see first timers speak in front of a crowd for the first time. Your film reminds me of that.
