Thoughts on intervention techniques — 2 Comments

  1. Hello Celine,

What a great question! As a PWS and SLP in training, I really found voluntary stuttering is a great tool to desensitize myself and gain control of my speech. I used to be a covert stutterer and would do anything to hide my stuttering. Years of hiding led to extreme shame and fear. Voluntary stuttering helped me a lot to put my stuttering into light and stutter openly. It frees me from hiding so that I can focus more on effective communication.
Besides voluntary stuttering, self-disclosure is also effective for me. Once I claim my identity as a PWS, I am so much less reactive when stuttering happens.Connecting to the stuttering community is also one of the best things that ever happened to me as a PWS. Attending self help groups and sharing my experience with other PWS help me in so many ways.
Thank you so much for participating the ISAD online conference! Hope my reply helps:)

    • Hi Jia,

I appreciate you taking your time to reply to me. Your reply helped a lot! Self-disclosure makes sense and it should be effective for every person who stutters.
