Question about resources — 2 Comments

  1. I work for STAMMA (the British Stammering Association) where part of my role involves coordinating a volunteer-led helpline and webchat service. People who stutter, parents of children who stutter, employers of people who stutter, and disability advisors contact the service to ask questions, raise concerns, or just to chat. We find that connecting people with both our organisation and others can be really valuable. There are loads of amazing resources out there! Just to give you flavour, I thought I’d list a few of the UK resources that we signpost our callers and webchatters to when appropriate:

    Stambassadors: https://actionforstammeringchildren.org/get-involved/stambassadors/
A brilliant array of short videos with adults who stutter talking about their careers. A fabulous resource for people who stutter, parents and employers.

‘Your Voice’ articles from the STAMMA website: https://stamma.org/your-voice?gclid=Cj0KCQjwhY-aBhCUARIsALNIC07bM5c7HuPdTV33Xl7nK1wA_YAcuitHGi7DYNMSDy5JSi62gI7ORW0aAtgxEALw_wcB
Written from a range of perspective, ‘Your Voice’ is an ever-growing collection of short articles describing personal experiences of stuttering. You can see a couple of my favourites here: https://stamma.org/your-voice/jasmine-doesnt-need-change-she-perfect-she and here: https://stamma.org/your-voice/covert-open-proud.

    ‘I have a stammer’ poem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aWSkk0UTH0
Children and young people who stutter educating the world.

    ‘My Stammering Tap’ video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGN0BB0HaCo
A fun animation, explaining the inner experience of stuttering.

    Editorial Guidelines: https://stamma.org/resources/editorial-guidelines
STAMMA’s resource to guide the media on using non-judgemental language around stuttering.

‘Supporting students who stammer in higher education’: https://stamma.org/news-features/supporting-students-who-stammer-higher-education
A really useful resource for disability advisors working in (UK) higher education settings, to create learning environments that welcome stuttering.

There are so many brilliant, useful resources out there, I could go on all night!

  2. I will also add:
    National Stuttering Association (www.westutter.org)
FRIENDS: National Association of Young People Who Stutter (friendswhostutter.org)
    Camp Shout Out (www.campshoutout.org)
