Question
Hello, I am senior studying communication disorders at CSUF. I am interested in the cognitive and emotional aspects of treatment surrounding fluency disorders. What are some effective ways that psychological counseling can be incorporated into fluency treatment?
Thanks for your question and for thinking out of the box.
Stuttering itself doesn’t have to be a psychological problem. However, because the the way people react, through words or actions, where stuttering is found “wrong” and should be “cured” (meant or by lack of knowledge), there is a risk of stuttering turning into so much more than a speech disorder. So CBT, Mindfulness, NLP etc are ways to help dealing with emotions as well as the people causing them. Also yoga, Qigong and similar can be of great help.
Happy ISAD and keep (them) talking
