ISAD in Puerto Rico
A group of speech-language pathologists from Puerto Rico got together in the summer of 2023 to become a special interest group in the area of fluency disorders. At this time, the group is made up of 6 clinicians and two students. Members of the academia, relatives of people who stutter and other clinicians meet once a month. The group has convened with the following goals.
Goals:
*To establish relationships between colleagues with the same interest.
* To keep us up to date on progress on the topic of fluency and fluency disorders.
* To inquire about resources available in other countries and languages and their applicability to our linguistic and cultural context.
* To participate in awareness-raising, advocacy, and promotion efforts for services to people with fluency disorders.
* To point out unethical practices or lack of evidence .
* To improve our competencies as clinicians when working with people who stutter
* To support existing or newly organized support groups for people who stutter and their families
* To serve as mentors to clinicians interested in specializing and to students interested in serving this population.
* To serve as expert consultants for validation of services, coding and rates for medical plan coverage or services in the school system.
It is a pleasure and an honor to spend time and share impressions
with these colleagues and we hope to further the work together with
people who stutter and their families in Puerto Rico.
