Isla GreentreeAbout the Author:

I am 13 years old and have had my stammer since I could talk. Some days are better than others but I have days where I struggle to get my words out at all. This is where my love for music and singing helps. Alongside music, my hobbies are Scouts and playing cricket and rugby.
Here is a song I wrote about my personal stammer experiences. I played some of the instruments for it and mixed it.
These are the lyrics to my song:
“You’re telling me what to say,
don’t want to do it anyway
You’re finishing my sentences,
then getting it wrong
I have to repeat what I said
And it’s getting old,
you think you’re helping but you’re not,
you’re not getting the gold
I’m not looking for compassion,
I’m not looking for fame
I’m not looking for someone to blame
I just wanna be heard
I’m speaking my mind
and I won’t let your ignorance leave me behind
You don’t get it,
you just don’t get it
I’m trying to speak, it just won’t come out
I’m more than my stammer
I’m more than words
you just don’t get it and it’s getting absurd.”

  1. Hi Isla – I love your song! I am old sixties hippy and and listening to music has always been a joy. Blues rock guitar is probably my thing. I sense a bit of a Nirvana vibe? Who are your favourite artists?
    Keep on Truckin’!

    • Hi Tim,
Thank you for listening. I love lots of different music but currently I am mainly listening to Avril Lavigne, Lewis Capaldi and Lucy Spraggan ☺️

  2. Hi Isla,

This is so cool! I love the words to your song and your music. There is real power in what you have to say through your music. Keep being heard and speaking your mind!

    Nic

I loved the song! I loved the beat! I love the words! Your music has so much power! It’s great to hear a young girl like you take this topic and make it happen, transforming it.

Thanks for sharing and “keep on rocking on the free world”

    • Hi Pedro,

Thank you so much for your lovely message. I will keep it up. Thank you for listening and I’m glad you like it ☺️

  6. Isla! You are so talented! Your message was so powerful, and well-written. I loved hearing your music, and hope you keep sharing your message with the world!

  7. So much talent! Your message can educate so many people and encourage others to share their story/feelings as well.

  8. Hello, Isla!
Thank you for sharing your song.
I am in graduate school to become a Speech Language Pathologist and I am currently taking a class about stuttering. Our class focuses on making sure our clients are heard and supported, which I love. Your song gave me more insight to what stuttering can be like for a young teenager, or anyone who stutters. I especially loved how you said you are so much more than your stammer- because you ARE!! I saw your previous comment about Avril Lavigne- I love her music as well!

    • Thank you for listening, it sounds like you’ll be a great speech therapist because you care. I eventually found an amazing speech therapist and she has helped so much. It is such an important job. Just keep listening x

  9. Isla, this is so cool! It’s going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the night!! I love that you were able to express your feelings in song version. Keep song writing, and keep fighting for your voice. You ARE so much more than your stammer, and keep reminding people of that! I loved this so much!

    • Thank you for listening. I have so many unfinished songs but I’m glad I finished this one. Music is very comforting for me x

  10. You literally ROCK! Wow, I love how you start softly, as in how we sometimes feel when we stutter, and suddenly you roar, as in how we talk to never more shut up when we found our voice!

Keep on roaring, as your music (I so envy you for doing what I’ve wanted to do for so many years, but never got to), and your lyrics are so important to hear. I hope you want to turn this into a YT clip, so that many more can hear you, and find their voices, thanks to you.

    Keep singing and happy ISAD

“Sure I stutter. What are you good at?”

  11. Hi Isla, great song! I love the lyrics and I like how it all flows together well. Expressing your thoughts and experiences through music is a powerful way to share what’s on your mind.

  12. You are really talented and the mixing of music is really great! I really like your lyrics and think that other kids can likely relate to your words. This is a pretty catchy tune! Thank you for sharing your song with the world!

  13. Hi,

Your music is beautiful, and I truly feel a lot of the emotions that you convey through the lyrics. Thank you so much for putting this out there, and I hope that you are able to put out even more music soon, too! 🙂 P.S. Just know that you are heard!!

    • Hi, thank you so much for listening and commenting. Yes, I am always working on more songs 😊
