International Stuttering Awareness Day
Online Conference, 2020
Creating a world that understands, accepts,
and supports people who stutter.
2020 logo created by Willemijn Bolks
Welcome to the 23rd ISAD Online Conference #ISAD2020! The conference runs from October 1 until October 22, International Stuttering Awareness Day.
This year’s theme is “Journey of Words – Resilience and Bouncing Back”.
We all have our stories on how stuttering has affected our lives, our school years, our jobs, our social lives. But we also have stories on how we deal with that. How we try to cope with stuttering, and situations that occur due to our stuttering, and how we try to find ways become more resilient and bounce back.
We are hoping to receive journeys of words from people who stutter (PWS), to share what is hard, and what is helping you to try and bounce back. And stories from Speech and Language Professionals (SLPs), both on your hurdles and how you are working on becoming more resilient, but also on how you help your clients to together find ways to bounce back. Also parents to children who stutter (CWS) are warmly invited to share your journeys.
So send us your journeys, expressed in any which way: written papers, graphic research results, videos, photo slides, cartoons, poems, children’s drawings, and any other expressive creations on the theme. By sharing our journeys, we can help others to express their own journeys, and inspire each other on our road to resilience and bounce back.
Since we chose this theme, the world has changed drastically and once again we have to find ways to be resilient and bounce back. And maybe our stories can give hope and inspiration on our roads to be resilient and bounce back also in this new situation.

Instructions for participants
The contributions in this conference reflect professional and consumer interests about stuttering and are presented by many different countries. Each submission has a threaded discussion at the bottom of the page for your comments and questions. Authors of the submissions will respond as they wish. Feel free to post your questions/comments at any time and check back for a response from the author.
You can enter the conference by clicking on the top menu bar and read the content. If you would like to comment or ask a question you must login – you can register or login using your Facebook, Twitter or Google, as shown on the login/register pages. If you are not already registered, you must register first. Login and register options appear on the right navigation bar. We have a login requirement to help us prevent spam, duplication and inappropriate posts. It is much harder to manage these after the fact than it is to manage proactively.
If you are posting comments on a submission, please check previous comments to be sure your question hasn’t already been asked. Also please check the replies to comments by others, as the authors give a lot of information, tips and ideas that might be interesting and useful for you.
As in previous Online Conferences, we will provide a space for participants to ask questions to Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and other professionals in the field. The professionals will monitor the questions in the ‘Talk to a Professional’ forum.
As in last year’s Online Conference, we will also provide a space for participants to ask questions to PWS, a section where you can ask PWS about their lives, work, coping skills, advice, etc. The PWS will monitor the questions in the ‘Talk to a PWS’ forum.
For those of you using the ‘Talk to a Professional’, the ‘Talk to a PWS’ and the ‘ISAD Around the World’ pages, please read the instructions on each introduction page before posting to that topic.
You can see and comment on submissions between October 1 and October 22. After October 22 you can still see submissions but you cannot comment.
People reading the pages of this Online Conference may not have English as their first language. An automated translation service can be found on the right side of each page of this website. To use it on a specific page, click the preferred language. From that point on, all pages you select will translate into your selected language.
Please keep comments relevant and in context of the current discussion. If you have a question that is not directly related to a submission or existing topic in ‘Talk to a Professional/PWS’, please create a new post in the ‘Talk to a Professional/PWS’ topic.
Contributors to the conference are solely responsible for the information they provide. The Online Conference team are responsible only for the accuracy of the information provided by contributors. The authors’ submissions will be permanently archived on the International Stuttering Awareness site pages for your future reference.
We hope you enjoy the conference!
Background
The International Stuttering Awareness Day, ISAD, (October 22) began in 1998, spear-headed by Michael Sugarman, Oakland, California. ISAD recognizes the growing alliance between SLPs and consumers, who are learning from each other and working together to share, give support, and educate one another and the general public on the impact that stuttering has on individuals’ lives. Online Conferences, organized by Judy Kuster, have been an integral part of International Stuttering Awareness Day since its inception.
Judy Kuster, currently emeritus professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato, put together the ISAD Online Conference every year since its inception in 1998 up to and including 2012, when Judy retired from chairing these wonderful conferences. Judy continues her work managing the Stuttering Home Page.
A global team has formed, made up of Anita Blom, Hanan Hurwitz, McKenzie Jemmett, Pamela Mertz, Scott Palasik, Tiffani Kittelstved, Rob Dellinger and Jaime Michise to produce, run and moderate the ISAD Online Conference. We hope we can live up to the high expectations of previous conference attendees.
Our vision: As a worldwide conference, we celebrate a wealth of perspectives and stories as we unite to raise awareness and work towards ‘creating a world that understands, accepts, and supports people who stutter’.
Our mission: The mission of the ISAD Online Conference is to carry on a tradition of education by offering a conference-type experience in the form of personal stories, videos, creative expression, therapy ideas, and research, along with ongoing discussions about stuttering. This conference connects people who stutter and their allies, encouraging meaningful dialogue around stuttering and allowing us to learn from a diversity of voices.
From October 1, submissions will be published on a variety of topics related to stuttering. An online forum, ‘Talk to a Professional’ and ‘Talk to a PWS’, will also be available, where you can ask questions of professionals in the field of stuttering as well as PWS. You will also find a section “ISAD Around the World” where people can post and comment on different activities on, or around, the ISAD.
For participants who need some basic information about stuttering, please read about Stuttering from the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association. Additional information is available on the Stuttering Home Page.
