Strengths to thrive — 2 Comments

  1. One trait that immediately comes to mind is the ability to be the only agent of change for yourself, to be able to take the reigns of your thoughts and feelings in your own hands, rather than letting them get swayed by people around you. This not only helps strengthen an internal locus of control (as opposed to waiting for external approval or gratification), but also prepares a person who stutters to deal with a possible relapse. At the end of the day, acceptance and approval from oneself is essential for potential acceptance and approval from the world.

  2. Dear Gunar,

Hi! Nice to hear from you. It is always great to have thoughtful questions here to discuss.

Let me ask you, what do you mean by characteristics? Do you mean personality characteristics, communication characteristics, value characteristics? All of they above?

I think I would answer this question starting out with this, people who stutter would benefit living a full life by being the person they wish and want to be, no matter how they speech (stuttering or not). This is the same answer I would give if ask, “What characteristics does anyone need to be successful in life?”

If I had to pick out another word that summarizes characteristics (several skills) that a person who stutters could live a successful life is RESILIENCE. This word involves so many different behaviors, traits, values in order to move through adverse times in order to keep growing and evolving.

Another characteristic that all people (not just people who stutter) can practice is flexibility (psychological and physical). When we practicing being flexible with how we approach life (and stuttering) we start to see optional behaviors (thoughts are included here) to move during every day life. The more rigid we are, the rigid out behaviors and this is where ego can sometimes rear its head because we get caught up in “right” and “wrong” when the truth is, life is a BUNCH of choices. Our ability to flex makes us able to do more, and be able to adjust and change when we want to.

These are just thoughts. Just options. If you agree, cool! If not, cool!
    Have a great day!
    With compassion and kindness,
    Scott
