Around the world – Uganda
In Uganda, Sub-Saharan Africa, numerous opportunities are lost and relationships are broken due to the way people communicate. Many misconceptions about stuttering prevail in our communities, leaving individuals who stutter without adequate support or advocacy to empower them to overcome stigma and isolation and reach their full potential. As a Speech and Language therapist, I’ve taken steps to create a supportive environment. My inspiration stems from my elder brother, Kamulegeya Joseph (MHSRIP), a role model who stuttered but defied the odds to become a secondary school teacher, teaching History and Divinity for over six years before his passing at 29 in 2018. Despite facing mockery, he delivered exceptional lessons. Recently, a study at our facility revealed that 60% of participants stuttered, and all reported experiencing stigma due to their speech.
