Contrasting the Treatment of Neurogenic and Developmental Stuttering
Hello professionals!
My name is Andrew, and I am a speech-language pathology graduate student learning about fluency disorders. Currently, my experience with treating fluency is quite limited, but I have treated two patients with acquired neurogenic stuttering following a CVA. My question is, how does the assessment, treatment, and prognosis of neurogenic stuttering differ from developmental stuttering? Are there any specific resources that I could provide to neurogenic stuttering clients to help them understand and manage their condition?
Hi Colletteah,
This is un interesting question. Neurogenic stuttering is quite different from developmental. It can be really frustrate]ing if your speech changed all of a sudden. And often it is not just the only thing that changed in the person’s life. It is always important to find out what the client’s goals are. They might say they want to speak fluent again, but we never know if that will be the case.
Junozovic-Zunic and colleagues, Van Borsel and colleagues and They and colleagues wrote some articles about neurogenic stuttering. Those might help you to talk about the characteristics and help them understand and manage their changed life.
I hope this answer helps you.
